Working with geological extremes and using techniques not highly utilised at the time, we provided support in the construction of a six lane freeway connecting west to east.   

Foundations assessment for TensarTech™ walls in steep mountainous conditions

The Dubai to Fujairah Freeway links the emirate of Dubai on the Persian Gulf, to the emirate of Fujairah on the gulf of Oman.

The new road alignment crossed difficult terrain including Wadi valleys and steep mountainous slopes of the Hajar Mountains. The Fujairah Emirate is almost totally mountainous and unlike other areas of the UAE, subject to periods of heavy rainfall in the winter months.

To assist Tensar International to select the best and most cost effective route, we were engaged to assess the foundations for three TensarTech™ walls on steep sidelong rock slopes.  

Geological and geotechnical mapping 

Site visits were undertaken at short notice and in difficult working conditions (50°C plus temperatures) during the summer months. The fieldwork involved geological and geotechnical mapping of complex geology in hydrothermally altered geological sequences. 

Rock mass characterisation was undertaken to enable slope stability and foundation assessments to be completed.

Foundation assessments included strength analysis on rock with joints in-filled with weaker materials; and stability analysis of foundations on rock materials which were heavily altered and jointed.  

Construction support and advice was provided, particularly with regard to drainage provision, which although not an apparent requirement at the time, would have great significance during the rainy season.

Our assistance enabled the walls to be constructed on rock in steep difficult terrain; an application which was not widely used at the time. 

We attended the site at short notice and provided our foundation assessment within the tight deadline, allowing Tensar International to meet their deadlines and provide a complete design package.
