Peter Mayers of Coffey’s Evaluation and Research team in London, has been featured in a Devex Google hangout where he discusses recent trends in monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
Mayers explains how capacity building in the global south, changing donor needs, and new technology have influenced the discipline in the past 10 years.
In response to questions of whether increased demands from donors for evidence of results stifles innovation, Mayers says that donors should have a relationship with implementing organisations based on “learning” whereby the organisations can be innovative “but at least have the evidence to show whether or not their innovations are working.”
Mayers also offers practical tips on how to budget and plan for effective M&E, in particular the necessary first step of defining the key objectives of the monitoring and evaluation.
