A Coffey senior consultant will discuss ways to provide safe and cost-effective asbestos removal as part of urban renewal projects at CleanUp 2015 today.
Senior Environmental Scientist, James Boyle, will present a case study on the subject, as demand for residential and commercial space in our cities creates a growing push for brownfield property development.
James’ case study demonstrates that effective management and remediation solutions helps address the potential health and safety, regulatory and legal challenges associated with development in built environments. Thorough sampling and being flexible in determining the appropriate remediation strategy was essential.
“Off-site disposal of soil with bonded asbestos containing materials can be cost prohibitive to development of many regional urban sites. Recent guideline developments provide for alternative, cost effective remedial solutions to the off-site disposal” James said.
“It’s crucial to determine the distribution of contaminated material and construct a thorough site model upfront, in order to determine if it is economically feasible and technically practical to adopt these alternative solutions”
“In this case, segregation of asbestos contaminated materials was feasible, but this will not always be suitable – understanding your site is key.”
CleanUp 2015 is the 6th International Contaminated Site Remediation Conference and is organised by the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE).
Held in Melbourne this week, it’s a chance for remediation scientists and engineers to share leading developments in the field.
