Coffey will conduct an environmental assessment of Wollongong Harbour’s central pier and slipway as part of a new project awarded by the Department of Primary Industries - Lands.
General Manager Environments NSW/ACT Lawrence Smith said the study would help determine the best remediation options for the site.
“Like any other infrastructure facility, any ports upgrade must be driven by informed decision making to ensure its long term sustainability,” Lawrence said.
“Our local site assessment and remediation experts will be interviewing long term users of the site to gather information on the history of maritime operations on the central pier.
“This will form part of a remediation action plan for the site.”
The site dates back more than 100 years and has been identified as a significant convict site, with strong heritage values. Our investigations will work carefully around these nominated areas.
The assessment is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
